The Wish Stealers Book Club Activities

wish+stealers.jpg (398×600)

Book Summary
An old lady gives Griffin a box with 10 pennies in it and a note that said she was the new “Wish Stealer.” The pennies were labeled: STOP, No Homework, Puppy, Change the World, Popular, Baby, Success, Dad, Most beautiful, World Peace, One Blank. As the wish stealer, all of her evil wishes would come true and all of her good wishes would not. The old lady had watched people throw coins in a fountain and she would go and collect the coin and then write down their wish on each penny. Through the book, she tries to return the wishes to people so that the curse would be lifted. She gives a girl “most beautiful” because she wants to be a dancer. She gives the “success” to a violin player. She gives the “dad” to Garrett because he misses his dad. She gives a puppy to an old lady that wanted a puppy. Griffin works on a science project with Garrett on how alchemists tried to change lead to gold. They do a fundraiser to raise pennies for money for the rain forest. Her grandmother reveals at the end that she had seen the girl stealing wishes and had thrown her own coins. One she wished for the wish stealer to “STOP” and one she wished silently. A third penny she kept to make her own luck.
The Wish Stealers by Tracy Trivas
Book Work Story Summary: Start with “Griffin goes to an antique store and an old lady gives her a box with pennies in it and a letter about a curse….” Each child adds on a couple of sentences to summarize the story.
Small Group Discussion Questions
Do you have anything that you consider lucky?
Griffin’s grandmother told her that she was a wish giver not a wish stealer. What are you?
The book had a group of travelling witches that gave messages to Griffin. Did you think that the witches were real or just actresses?
E pluribus unum out of many one.” Pennies add up. Griffin and Garrett were able to raise over $5000 with a penny drive. Did you know that an estimated $4,000 is thrown into the Trevi Fountain in Rome each day.$12,000 a year is thrown into the Bellagio Resort fountain. Why do you think we have E pluribus unum out of many one.” on our penny?

The Indian Head penny that Mariah gave Griffin turned out to be worth $150. The US Mint stopped making Indian Head pennies in 1809. They started making pennies with Lincoln’s head on the front. The back keeps changing. (Show pictures). Some people collect pennies. (Show penny folders) Do you have any collections?

2. Tape the penny onto the card.
3. Write a lucky message using marker:

(If time allows, take your group around the school and leave your lucky pennies waiting to be found!)

Small Group Discussion Questions
Griffin has a secret Mysterium Collection Box under her bed with “Two eagle feathers passed down by her great-grandfather before they become illegal to keep, half of a heart from her best-friend-forever necklace she share with Libby Barrett, an old lace valentine her grandma made as a girl, and three smooth, lucky stones.” Do you have a secret box where you keep treasures? Where would you keep it? What would it contain?
Griffin made 7 wishes when she said “It looks like it’s going to rain” at the same time as her mother (one for each word). If you could make just 3 wishes, what would they be for?
When mysterious things would happen in the story, the weather would often be stormy. Why? Weather can be used by writers to set a mood for a story. What types of feelings do you get when it is snowy? Sunny? Foggy?
Griffin was scared and didn’t know what to do with the box. She didn’t tell her parents because she was afraid of the curse. Should she have told them?
Mariah gave Griffin the black obsidian stone that she could use to see the future. Would you want to be able to see the future?

Wish Guessing Game
I found some wish stealer pennies. (Each child takes a turn as the drawer and pulls out one penny clue.
Clue giver useswhite board with dry erase markers)
Clues are: Hair, Happy, Clean room, Homerun, Snow, Baby, Ice cream, Friday, Beach

Change these Wish Stealers into Wish Givers
Read each scenario from the story.  Have two students act it out with a new dialogue where Mr. Blackwell and Kristina’s mom are Wish Givers.
Scenario 1.
Garrett and Griffin: We are doing a science project on how alchemists tried to turn metal into gold. We want to do a fundraiser to turn pennies into gold for a charity and we need to get your approval.
Mr. Blackwell: Do you really think pennies will help save the Amazon rain forest? It’s not worth your effort.
Scenario 2.
Kristina: I want to take ballet lessons so that I can be a beautiful ballerina.
Mom: Ballet lessons are a waste of money because only one percent of ballet dancers can get a job or make a living.
Snack: Cups of “Lucky Charms”
Extra Time Activities
(Drawing Game) Take turns drawing things that are either lucky or unlucky
Rabbits Foot, 4 Leaf Clover, Wishbone, Horseshoe, Coins in wishing wells, Eyelash, Holding your breath in a tunnel, Walking under a ladder, breaking a mirror, black cat crosses your path

The CandyMakers: Book Club Activities

Check out the PDF with pictures here!

Book Selection: The Candymakers by Wendy Mass
The Candymaker Summary
Four kids are chosen to enter in the Logan, Miles, Daisy, and Philip have been picked, along with 28 other kids from around the country, to enter annual candy contest. Logan is the candy maker’s son. When he was little someone dropped a toy truck in a machine. Logan reached into get it and became scarred. His parents shielded him from other children after the accident; they stopped the Factory Picnic. Miles is boy who became obsessed with the afterlife after saw a girl go underwater and never come back up.  Daisy is a child spy who entered the contest to find out the chocolate’s secret ingredient for a client. Phillip is from a business focused family. His artistic mother died when he was small leaving him the gift of music. He is mean to the other kids because he is obsessed with winning. The story is told from the four different perspectives of the kids. Through the different perspectives we learn clues about the other contestants.
Meet outside of the Life is Sweet factory for their first day of work. They meet Max (a head factory worker) who gives them a tour of the factor. They explore all the different rooms and meet all the experts in candy making. Later, they learn about some of the machines that will help them make their candy. One machine puts a hard shell onto your piece of candy. The next day, they come back and get right to work. Each of the contestants secretly works on their special candy.
On the second night of the contest Logan invites Miles to sleepover at the factory. That same night Daisy sneaks in to the factory to take the secret ingredient while Philip also attempted to steal the secret. They all meet in the chocolate room and confront each other. Daisy admits she is a spy but she wanted to steal the ingredient to keep it from her client. Miles realizes Daisy was the girl in the lake and she didn’t die (she was training to hold her breath). Phillip was the boy that threw the toy car and gave Logan the scars. Philip admits he was stealing the ingredient because he didn't want his dad to buy the factory. Then Philip and his dad made an agreement that if he won the contest, his dad wouldn’t buy the factory. All four of the contestants became friends and helped perfect Philip's candy, the Harmonacandy. Phillip wins the contest and all four become best friends.

Music as kids enter: “The Candyman” by Sammy Davis Jr.
Fill out Name Tags. (Break into groups of 7 or fewer.)
Introduction: Go around the circle and say your name and your favorite candy.
Book Worm Activity:
Who has finished the book? (Kids that haven’t read the book should sit out and listen. Those who haven’t finished should sit nearer the leader.) We are going to play a game called book worm. During the book worm, we’ll summarize the whole story. To “summarize” means to tell the important points of the story that way even kids who haven’t read it will know the story.
I’ll start with a sentence or 2 about the beginning of the book. Then I’ll squeeze hand of the next person to let them know it’s their turn to add a sentence. Be sure not to jump to far in the story so that the people in the tail of the book worm will get to play, too.
Leader begins with a setup sentence…
“Logan lived in the candy factory with his parents and always dreamed about following his father’s footsteps and becoming the candymaker. A new Candymaker was going to be selected from a group of children and he was in the contest…”
Each child adds a sentence (or 2) with an important part of the plot so that the story to summarize the story.
Backwards Talk Activity:
One of my favorite characters was Miles. What were some unusual things about Miles? Allergic to Merry Go Rounds, Pink, Rowboats; Fascinated with death; Talked Backwards
Can you talk backwards? The best way to learn to talk backwards is to write the words down and then read them.  My name is Becca. รจ Ym eman si acceb.
Write down your name backwards. Try to say your name backwards.
Can you say the alphabet backwards? Let’s try together.
ZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA…This is a great trick but it takes practice. It helps to break them into groups.
(Play the reverse alphabet song: http://www.guruparents.com/alphabet-backwards.html )
Book Discussion:
·         What was unusual about the style used by the author when he wrote this book? He told the same story from 4 different points of view.
·         Which character are you most like? Daisy, Logan, Miles, or Philip
·         Have you ever met someone who looks different like Logan? How did you feel/react? Logan is burned and deformed. At first, the characters are all bothered by it but they get used to it.
·         Phillip’s mom died and he isn’t close to his dad. Who did he talk with? His chauffeur. Do you have someone besides your parents that you count on and can talk to about important things?
·         A butterfly appears several times in the book. What do you think the butterfly represents? “If nothing ever changed, there would be no such things as butterflies.” All of the children change during the story. Logan rejoins society after being protected in the factory for years. Miles sheds the guilt from not being able to help the drowning girl. Phillip admits his love of music and rejects immoral practices. Daisy…
·         What did you think the secret ingredient was? The story’s secret ingredient ended up being that the candymaker puts ‘himself’ in the mix.
·         If you could create your own candy for the contest, what would it be?
Butterfly Craft
Pass out butterflies. Each child decorates the butterfly and glues the penny on the butterfly and can balance it on their finger.

Secret Ingredient Game
Several companies advertise that their product has a secret ingredient. Coca Cola keeps theirs under lock and key. So does KFC and Heinz ketchup.
Hand out a secret ingredient in an envelope to a student. He draws the secret ingredient on a white board. No talking or writing letters. Group guesses.
·         Orange Juice
·         Candy Cane
·         Cherry
·         Broccoli
·         Watermelon
·         Pumpkin
·         Tooth paste
·         Coconuts
·         Alligator

The Wish Stealers by Tracy Trivas
When a sinister old woman leaves Griffin Penshine a box of twelve shiny pennies, she sets in motion a desperate quest—because the old woman was a wish stealer, and each penny represents a wish she stole from a wishing fountain decades earlier. Somehow, Griffin has to make things right, or the opposite of her own wishes will come true—and it could literally be a matter of life and death. The Wish Stealers introduces a new voice in middle-grade fantasy, as bright and sparkling as Griffin’s pennies.

September Book

Now is the time to start reading the book for our September meeting! The Candmakers by Wendy Mass is  a captivating book and  a recipient of  the Sunshine State Young Readers Award for 2013-2014.

"Four children have been chosen to compete in a national competition to find the tastiest confection in the country. Who will invent a candy more delicious than the Oozing Crunchorama or the Neon Lightning Chew?"

East Lake Book Buddies Preview

This past Thursday, I gave East Lake Elementary a preview of the Book Buddies program at Meet the Teacher.  I set up a booth in the cafeteria to spread the word. I handed out flyers and had a sign up sheet to receive more information. I received an amazing response with a full page of email addresses interested in the program. As students showed interest in the program, they decorated a book buddy and posted it on the board. With all of the interest in a East Lake book club, I am working on organizing three different clubs; one at school and two in near by neighborhoods.
